“We’re wasting time,” Skylar said. “We’ve got an op to run. Tell me why you think we’re going to kill you so I know what the hell is going on.”

“I’ll keep it simple,” Nguyen said. “I’m in the middle of long-term project dealing with triads from our friends up north and a very dangerous drug trade. We’re talking about an environment where human life isn’t exactly put on a pedestal. Assets I’ve been working with for months suddenly go dark or end up floating facedown in the middle of a rice paddy. Then I get a message saying I’m supposed to meet someone with a certain stockpile of gear at a certain restaurant at a certain time in a town in the middle of nowhere. Looks like a setup.”

“Do we look like we work for the triads?” Skylar asked.

“You’d be surprised how little it takes to flip the people you thought you knew.”

Wolfe held out his hands in a placating gesture. Skylar could see him playing it cool, keeping the emotion from his features. But she also recognized that slight glint in his eyes. She’d seen it enough by now to know he was ready to throw down if everything hit the fan.

“If this was a hit, a setup, we’d have come with a lot more than a pocketknife,” he said.

“You know as well as I do that guns and knives aren’t the only things that kill a field officer,” Nguyen said. “I gave you something, you give me something. I’m supposed to be your supplier, your guide, and your translator. And I don’t even know why.”

“I’m not sure you want us to add more to your plate,” Wolfe said. “Better off not knowing.”

“When I’m told to suspend my operations, which are pretty damn important to me, and abandon an active investigation where I was inches toward flipping my new mark, I’m either being set up or else something much bigger is going on. Which is it?”

“Bigger,” Skylar said.

“Like world-ending bigger?” Nguyen asked, brow raised. “Because if it’s anything less than apocalyptic, I’m not going to be happy.”

Wolfe sighed. “We need to get moving.”

Nguyen looked between them. “I get the sense she doesn’t mind exaggerating things, but that’s not your deal, Wolfe.”

“What’s that supposed to mean?” Skylar asked.

“Former military, right?” Nguyen asked, looking her up and down. “I can tell by that cocky way you walk down a street. Like you’re not afraid of a fight. Got the gait of a Marine.” She paused. “That’s not quite right.” Then she grinned. “Maybe a pilot.”

Skylar didn’t like how easily this woman read her. She’d hit it right on the nose. “Anything wrong with that?”

Nguyen laughed. “Not unless you’re trying to blend in. Watch Wolfe. The guy’s big and tall, and somehow, even in little old Ninh Binh, he can make himself disappear. He gives off an aura that convinces your eyes to pass right over him. You might try watching him.”

“You going to critique us or help us?” Skylar said.

“I’m still waiting for you to tell me what’s up,” Nguyen said.
